Nico and horses never got along. And yet that didn't stop him from trying. He thought they were beautiful. Everything about Poseidon's creations drew Nico in. And everything about the son of Hades repelled the horses. All of the horses at Camp Olympus (and the ones when he'd been at Camp Half-blood) hated him. he smelled of death and creatures of the Underworld. But Nico liked to try.
On this particular day, Nico was armed with carrots and sugar cubes. He hung a few stolen carrots off of his belt and a bag of sugar cubes was tied around one of his belt loops. The brunet was near silent as he slunk into the stables. He hoped if the horses didn't hear him, only saw him, they would be more inclined to let him pet them. Nico stepped out of the shadows and into the stable, wincing when the nearest horses started whinnying earnestly and trying to get as far away from him as they could. Nico winced and pulled out a carrot, walking toward a horse who was cowering in its stall but not making any noise.
Nico offered the carrot out to the horse. The two had a staring match before the horse hesitantly took the carrot, munching it loudly. When he was done, he whinnied and Nico couldn't help but smile a bit, untying the sugar cubes. He dumped a few into his hand and set the bag on the ground, offering his palm to the horse. The horse eagerly began eating the sugar cubes, even allowing the brunet to rub his nose.
"You're a sweet one," Nico cooed, rubbing between the horse's eyes. "You're a real sweet thing, aren't you?" He tensed slightly, though, when he heard footsteps in the stable with him. He didn't turn around, but continued to pet the horse in front of him. "Sweet thing." The horse huffed and leaned back, staring at him expectantly. "You want more? You pig," Nico chided warmly, offering the horse another carrot as he did so. His shoulders were still tense, his senses going wild. He didn't know who was in there with him but it was a strong presence that almost scared Nico.
